After the earthquake and fire that destroyed much of San Francisco in April 1906, hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. Many of these people established temporary refugee camps, using debris from the destruction to cobble together shelters.

This photograph illustrates the wide, hard-packed sands of the beach at Daytona Beach, used by early motorists as a race track and testing ground for new vehicles. Bathers enjoy the surf to the left, while many automobiles are visible in the rest of the photograph.

Caption: "Columbia River Scenes.," c. 1920. Shows the Vista House and Crown Point from a point on the hillside below. The Vista House was built in 1918 as a memorial to Oregon's pioneers. Designed by Edgar M. Lazarus, it sits atop Crown Point, a rocky promontory overlooking the Columbia River gorge, along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Caption: "French 75 Millimeter Gun In Action," c. 1912-1915. Commonly called the French 75, or simply the 75, this heavy, rapid-fire artillery gun was developed in 1897. During World War I it was adapted to fire shells full of toxic gas, and was also modified for mounting on an armored vehicle. See also 96-07-08-alb05-060.
