Caption: "Sea Coast Guns.," c. 1908-1912. View of a disappearing coastal defense gun, with its carriage. Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire.

Hillside ravaged by hydraulic mining, in which a pressurized jet of water washes sediment and gravel into a series of sluices, allowing the heavier gold and gold-carrying sediment to sink to the bottom for removal. California banned this environmentally destructive practice in 1884.

No Caption: c. 1910. Ocean shore scene with waves and high spray, with a promontory in the distance featuring several buildings. The Vue de L'eau (View of the Water) was a station on the Santa Cruz, Garfield Park and Capitola Electric Railway electric streetcar line. Built in 1891, the station was located at the very end of the line, on a promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It featured an observatory on the top story. The same company also built a casino, ballroom, and restaurant nearby. The station burned down in 1925. See also 96-07-08-alb05-159.

Caption: "Venice, Calif," c. 1911. Unidentified woman standing on a bridge over Lion Canal in Venice, California. In 1905, Abbot Kinney built a series of canals as part of a development project along Santa Monica Beach, hoping to recreate the look and feel of Italy's iconic "Floating City" in southern California. Called Ocean Park at first, gondoliers sailed boats under elegant bridges such as the one shown in this photograph, in an effort to attract businesses, residents, and investors. In 1911, the name officially changed to Venice. By 1929, however, many of the canals had been filled in to create roadways, and those canals that remained fell into disrepair. A revitalization movement in the early 1990s has restored some of the canals, and made the area a desirable residential neighborhood.

Monte Rio, north of San Francisco in Sonoma County, became a resort area in the early twentieth century, after the sawmills providing the area's primary industry closed down.

Built in 1526 as a residence for Spanish conqueror, Hernan Cortes, the Palacio de Cortes is the oldest conserved colonial era civil structure in the continental Americas. It is now El Museo Cuauhnahuac, a regional museum, which features murals by Mexican artist, Diego Rivera.
