Caption: "Cliff House, San Francisco," c. 1920. The building shown here is the fourth iteration of the Cliff House, a neo-classical design built after a fire destroyed the Victorian structure previously at the site in 1907. Reconstruction of the iconic restaurant began in 1908, and a new Cliff House opened in 1909 (the building in this photograph). The building was extensively remodeled in the 1930s.

Founded in 1842 and officially chartered in 1844, the University of Notre Dame is a Catholic research university famous world-wide for the quality of the education it provides. The design, made during the tenure of Governor James Rolph, is an adaptation of early California mission style. The painting is made with water color mixed with a small amount of Chinese white; the sky is blown on with a brush. Project for Office of the Governor.

Caption: "San Jacinto Battle Ground -- Tex, June 11 34." View of the gated entry to the San Jacinto Battleground. The site was the location of the Battle of San Jacinto, in which the Texan Army (led by Sam Houston) defeated the Mexican army (led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna), paving the way for the formation of the Republic of Texas. A Texas Historic Site, the battleground was also declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
