Caption: "Guard Mount. Presidio," c. 1906, shows two groups of men in formation on the Presidio grounds. One group of men is playing musical instruments, while the other group is carrying firearms. Established in 1776 by Spanish explorers, the Presidio is a fortified location overlooking the Golden Gate, the entrance into San Francisco Bay. It was closed as a military structure in 1995, and is now a park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Caption: "Division Headquarters. Camp Lewis, Wash.," c. 1918. Shows the two-story building that served as Division Headquarters for Camp Lewis in Washington. The Camp was established by the U.S. Army in 1917, as part of the U.S.'s preparations for eventual entry into World War I. Rapid construction had the camp ready to house 60,000 men within a few months. The site is still in use as a military facility, under the name Fort Lewis.

The building shown here is the fourth iteration of the Cliff House, a neo-classical design built after a fire destroyed the Victorian structure previously at the site in 1907. Reconstruction of the iconic restaurant began in 1908, and a new Cliff House opened in 1909 (the building in this photograph). This neo-classical building was extensively remodeled in the 1930s.

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 21, 1919 and the U.S. Senate on June 4, 1919 in a special congressional session. The amendment was then sent to the states for ratification. On October 25, 1919, Governor William D. Stephens issued a proclamation calling the California Legislature into a special session to consider ratification. When lawmakers convened on November 1, 1919, California ratified the amendment, becoming the 18th state to do so. The 19th Amendment received the required approval of 36 states on August 18, 1920, establishing that voting rights could not be denied on account of sex nationwide. Finally, on August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution, granting women in the United States the right to vote on the federal level. This day is still commemorated and known today as Women’s Equality Day.

Caption: "Weinstock Lubin Store. K. Street Sacramento.," c. 1906. Street scene along Sacramento's K Street, with the Weinstock Lubin flagship store prominently featured at the right side of the photograph. Weinstock's opened as Lubin's at 4th and K Street in 1874, growing over the years into a downtown landmark. The company opened stores throughout California, as well as Nevada and Utah. The building pictured here replaced the original store, which burned to the ground in 1903. The site is now occupied by Macy's.
