Caption: "French 75 Millimeter Gun In Action," c. 1912-1915. Commonly called the French 75, or simply the 75, this heavy, rapid-fire artillery gun was developed in 1897. During World War I it was adapted to fire shells full of toxic gas, and was also modified for mounting on an armored vehicle. See also 96-07-08-alb05-060.

Caption: "London Guarantee & Wrigley Bldg. Chicago," c. 1923. This photograph, taken at street level, features the London Guarantee Building (with the small cupola still under construction at its top) and the Wrigley Building (just to the right of the London Guarantee Building). The London Guarantee Building (also called the London Guaranty and Accident Building), designed by Alfred S. Alschuler, was completed in 1923. The Wrigley Building, constructed by the famous chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., consists of two towers. The south tower was completed in 1921, while the north tower was finished in 1924 (you can make out construction scaffolding on the top of the tower in this photograph).

Caption: "Pile Driver in the Breakers, Columbia River Jetty.," c. 1910. View of a large pile driver used in the construction of the jetty system at the mouth of the Columbia River. This is likely at the end of the so-called South Jetty, extending more than six miles into the ocean from Point Adams on the Oregon side of the river mouth. The jetty system at the mouth of the Columbia River was constructed between 1885 and 1917. Designed to funnel water from the Columbia River in a more concentrated fashion into the Pacific Ocean, the jetty system helped create a deeper, more stable shipping channel.

Caption: "Venice," c. 1915, shows the site of Villa City Boating, where visitors to the resort seaside village of Venice could purchase gondola rides on the canals to visit the town. The seaside resort was founded by tobacco millionaire, Abbot Kinney in 1905, and designed to be like the namesake Italian city.

Caption: "The China Clippers [sic] First Start Across the Pacific Ocean. Nov. 22, 1935." View of the China Clipper, a Martin M-130 four-engine flying boat constructed for Pan American Airways in 1935. One of the largest planes of its time, the China Clipper flew the first transpacific commercial airmail flight between San Francisco and Manila in the Philippines. The China Clipper was destroyed in a crash ten years later, in January 1945, at the Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Caption: "Fairmount [sic] Hotel - S.F.," C. 1906. View of the Fairmont Hotel, a luxury hotel in San Francisco. Although construction was mostly finished in 1906, the advent of the San Francisco earthquake and fire of that year damaged the hotel's interior and delayed opening until 1907. It was the first hotel in what is now the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain. In 1945, the San Francisco hotel was host to an international conference that culminated in the formation of the United Nations.
