    Caption: "Tacoma Bridge.," c. 1913. Double leaf, Rall-type bascule bridge spanning the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. This is one of the rare instances where William McCarthy's labeling of the photographs in the albums is incorrect. The Broadway Bridge, built in 1913, was Portland's first bascule bridge, or drawbridge. It retains the distinction of being the longest bascule bridge span in the world.

    Caption: "Yosemite Falls," c.1917. Both the Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls, on Yosemite Creek, are visible in this photograph, taken from the valley floor. The highest waterfall in Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Falls is made up of two successive cascades falling a total of 2,425 feet from the top of the Upper Fall to the base of the Lower Fall. The Upper Fall alone is 1,430 feet high, and is one of the top twenty highest waterfalls in the world.

    California’s first Constitutional Convention was held in Monterey in 1849. The original constitution, published in both English and Spanish the same year, was written by 48 delegates on nineteen pages of parchment. Article II, The Right to Suffrage stipulates that only white males have the right to suffrage.
