Caption: "Camp Herman," c. 1912-1915. View of the Zayante Inn at Mount Herman. Originally the site of Hotel Tuxedo, in 1906 a group later known as the Mount Herman Association, Inc. purchased the building and surrounding property, and renamed it the Zayante Inn. The inn became a Christian retreat center. Although this building was destroyed by fire in 1921, the retreat center was rebuilt as the Mount Herman Christian Conference Center, still operating today.

No Caption: A 1935 three-cent U.S. Postage stamp, featuring Boulder Dam, now known as Hoover Dam, which was constructed between 1931 and 1936. The concrete arch-gravity dam is located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River on the border between Clark County, Nevada, and Mojave County, Arizona. A National Historic Landmark, the dam provides hydroelectric power, water storage, flood control, and recreation at Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam's construction.

Caption: "San Jacinto Battle Ground -- Tex, June 11 34." View of the gated entry to the San Jacinto Battleground. The site was the location of the Battle of San Jacinto, in which the Texan Army (led by Sam Houston) defeated the Mexican army (led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna), paving the way for the formation of the Republic of Texas. A Texas Historic Site, the battleground was also declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.

No caption, c. 1925. View of the RMS Franconia, an ocean liner operated by the Cunard Line. She launched in October 1922, operating on the route between Liverpool and New York in the summers, and as a world cruise ship in the winters. The Franconia was requisitioned as a troop ship during World War II, then returned to the Cunard Line until being retired in 1956.

Caption: "Fort Point S.F." c. 1906. See also 96-07-08-alb06-009 with caption: "Fort Point and Golden Gate." A view of Fort Point in the foreground, with ships in the bay. Fort Point was part of an effort by the U.S. government to protect the Golden Gate, entrance to the San Francisco Bay. Built between 1853-1861 of brick and mortar, the fort included emplacements for 141 guns but never fired a weapon in defense of the Bay.

Caption: "San Diego Courthouse.," c. 1905. View of the second courthouse built by San Diego County, completed in 1889. Designed by architectural firm Cornstock & Trotsche of San Francisco, this elaborate building featured a bell and clock tower, statues of four presidents, and 42 stained-glass windows honoring each state in the Union at the time of installation. The tower was removed in 1939. Twenty years later, the entire building was demolished in favor of a newer facility.

Caption: "Court House -- Seattle.," c. 1916. The King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle, Washington, was built in 1916 as a five-story structure, as shown in this photograph. Six floors were added in 1930, and another three before 1965. In 1967, a massive remodeling project imposed aluminum curtain walls on the building's east and west sides, changed the main entryway switched to Third Avenue rather than Jefferson Street, and made other changes to the interior.

No caption. This commemorative ten-cent stamp was affixed to the same page as Photographs 073 and 074. With "United States Postage, Lindbergh Air Mail" written across the top, it shows the biplane Spirit of St. Louis, over a drawing of the Atlantic Ocean between New York and Paris. Issued in June 1927 as a tribute to Charles Lindbergh, who made the first non-stop flight between Paris and New York in May of that year.

Caption: "Alum Rock," c. 1910. Grace McCarthy standing in front of a gazebo in Alum Rock Park. The park, founded in 1872, is one of California's oldest municipal parks. The gazebo, the park's oldest standing structure (built in about 1890), features a fountain that used to supply water from the mineral springs in the area. Today, the fountain's water comes from the City of San Jose's municipal supply.
