Caption: "Seattle Docks," c. 1914. Dock facilities at Seattle, showing a clock tower, as well as the G.T.P., or Grand Trunk Pacific, dock, a shipping pier at the end of Madison Street (the G.T.P. watchtower is visible at the far left of the photograph). This dock, built in 1910, was destroyed by a fire on July 30, 1914. It was rebuilt, but without the watchtower, and served the city until 1964 when it was demolished.

Caption: "Gatling gun," c. 1905. three unidentified men and William McCarthy (third from right) stand near a Gatling gun. The Gatling gun was an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.

Caption: "Washington Park, Albany, New York, Sept. 8, 1934." Albany's Washington Park was established in the early 1870s. Washington Park Lake, a portion of which is seen in this photograph, was created by damming Beaverkill Creek in 1873. The Lake House in the photograph was constructed in 1929, replacing an earlier building.

Caption: "Yellowstone - Grand Canyon," c. 1923. Bird's eye view of a portion of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The 308-foot tall cascade of Lower Yellowstone Falls can be seen at the top of the photograph, flowing into the Canyon. The Canyon is approximately 24 miles long, and between 800 and 1,200 feet deep.

Caption: "Forbidden Garden -- Santa Barbara Mission," c. 1910. View of the gardens associated with Santa Barbara Mission. The gardens initially served as the location for instructing neophytes (Native American converts living at the mission) in trades and skills deemed necessary to life in European civilization. Later, the garden was used for meditation. The garden was often dubbed "forbidden" because it was closed to female visitors, as were many enclosures in active missions.
