Caption: "Echo Park [sic] Los Angeles," c. 1910. William McCarthy standing on a bridge in Los Angeles' Echo Lake Park. The park opened in 1895. The lake was originally created in 1868 to support the operations of a mill. The mill, however, closed seven years later. The site was later selected for conversion to a city park.

Caption: "Union Depot St. Louis," c. 1923. Opened in 1894, the St. Louis Union Depot was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Designed by Theodore Link, the building features a 280-foot-tall clock tower. At the time of its construction, it was the largest, busiest railroad station in the world.

Council Crest Park in Portland, Oregon was the site of an amusement park between 1907 and 1929. The buildings in this photograph were part of that park. The Observatory, built in 1907, was demolished in 1941 to make room for a water tower. The area is still in use as a municipal park.
