Caption: " Grand Canyon - Yellowstone," c. 1923. Bird's eye view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The 308-foot tall cascade of Lower Yellowstone Falls can be seen at the top of the photograph, flowing into the Canyon. The Canyon is approximately 24 miles long, and between 800 and 1,200 feet deep.

Built between 1758 and 1778, the Palladian-style mansion is now owned in trust by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and open to the public.

The porch is sheltered by a low roof supported by tree trunks or thick tree branches and thatched with grass or sticks. Located south of Phoenix and including the town of Sacaton, the Gila River Indian Reservation is home to members of the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and the Pee-Posh (Maricopa) tribes. The reservation was established in 1859. Eighty years later, in 1939, Congress provided for the self-governance of the reservation via the Gila River Indian Community.

Caption: "Blue Rock Springs -- Solano Co.," c. 1915. Grace McCarthy (far left) and two unidentified friends or relatives at what is now known as Blue Rock Springs. In the 1860s, White Sulphur Springs (in the vicinity of Vallejo) was developed for use as a mineral springs resort, featuring a hotel, several cottages, and an "amusement" building with a dance floor, bar, and billiard room. Manuel Madrid obtained the property around the turn of the twentieth century, and changed the name to Blue Rock Springs. The area is now managed by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District as Blue Rock Springs Park.

caption: "In Victoria, B. C.," c. 1906. William McCarthy (standing in the center) and four unidentified men with horse-and-buggies in the Gorge. The Gorge is a narrow tidal inlet in Victoria running from Selkirk Trestle to the Craigflower Bridge. The inlet became a popular recreation destination for the area's residents as Victoria grew.

Caption: "Devils Gate -- Nevada -- Elevation 7540 Feet." Devil's Gate is a rock formation near Silver City, Nevada. In the nineteenth century a portion of the formation was blasted away to create enough space for a wagon road, which became a toll road serving as an entryway to the Nevada silver fields.

Caption: "Nudist Colony - San Diego Exposition," c. 1935. The Zoro Garden Nudist Colony, named for the Persian mystic, Zoroaster, was an unusual and controversial attraction that featured partially nude men and women performing as nudists. Exposition visitors were charged twenty-five cents to watch the "nudists" perform ceremonies and other activities. Today, the sunken Zoro Garden in Balboa Park is a butterfly garden.
