Caption: "Fruit Exhibit Watsonville." Exhibit at the 1912 "Big Week" in Salinas (Monterey County), an event still celebrated today as the Salinas Rodeo. The exhibit displays a building made almost entirely out of apples and apple slices. See also 96-07-08-alb05-068.

Caption: "Fort Casey Washington," c. 1909. Overview of several buildings at Fort Casey, located on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. Construction began on the fort in 1897. Fort Casey was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. The area is now a state park.

Caption: "St. Josephs Oratore [sic] - Montreal," c. 1925. William and Grace McCarthy beneath the entry arch to the complex containing St. Joseph's Oratory, a Roman Catholic basilica and shrine. Work on the building began in 1924, and continued until 1967. Only the first level of the building had been completed when this photograph was taken.

Caption: "Congressional Library," c. 1925. Several groups of unidentified people outside the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, on a rainy day. The building, originally called the Library of Congress Building, opened to the public in 1897. It's name was changed in 1980 to honor Thomas Jefferson, Founding Father and third President of the U.S.

Caption: "Stow Lake, G.G. Park," c. 1906. A man-made lake created in 1893 as part of Golden Gate Park. The lake surrounds Strawberry Hill Island, seen in the center of this photograph. Visitors still enjoy Stow Lake today, engaging in activities such as boating and picnicking.

Caption: "Panama-Pacific International Exposition, General View." The Panama Pacific International Exposition was held to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, as well as inventive technologies and new industries from around the world. It was also a chance for San Francisco to show the world how the great city had rebuilt and thrived after the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Caption: "Crater Lake, Oregon - View from Watchman Point," c. 1935. Located in the Crater Lake National Park, Crater Lake is a caldera lake formed about 7,700 years ago by the collapse of the volcano, Mount Mazama. Its 1,949 foot depth makes it the deepest lake in the United States.

Caption: "C.P.R. Depot Vancouver B.C.," c. 1908-1912. View of the imposing, gothic chateau-like Vancouver Station, serving the Canadian Pacific Railway. Built in 1899, this station only stood until 1914, when it was replaced with a newer facility and subsequently demolished.

Mountain scene showing road winding around hills and ridges, with a few scattered automobiles also present. First opened in 1915, the Ridge Route was the first paved highway connecting Los Angeles with the San Joaquin Valley.

Caption: "Old Spanish Fort -- Petaluma," c. 1920. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo began construction on the Petaluma Adobe in 1836, as a ranch house and defensive structure. It is now the centerpiece of Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park, having been reconstructed after deterioration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It is the largest existing, privately-built adobe in the state.
