Caption: "Fallen Giant - Mariposa Grove," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy poses with two unidentified people next to the Fallen Monarch, the enormous trunk of a fallen Giant Sequoia in Maripose Grove. It is estimated that the tree fell more than 300 years ago, but the natural resistance of Giant Sequoias to rot has preserved the trunk to the present time.

The Spanish Colonial-Revival style El Mirado Hotel at Palm Springs opened in 1927 and became one of the most fashionable resort destinations for powerful Hollywood studio heads and celebrities. Here Grace is seen posing at the edge of the hotel's famous "plunge."

Built between 1848 and 1888 to commemorate George Washington (former Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and first President of the United States), the obelisk is the world's tallest stone structure at a height of 555 feet. Caption: " Grand Canyon - Yellowstone," c. 1923. Bird's eye view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The 308-foot tall cascade of Lower Yellowstone Falls can be seen at the top of the photograph, flowing into the Canyon. The Canyon is approximately 24 miles long, and between 800 and 1,200 feet deep.

Caption: "George Washingions [sic] Home, Rear View, Mt. Vernon, Va. July 22, 1934." Rear view of Mount Vernon, the plantation home of George and Martha Washington. Built between 1758 and 1778, the Palladian-style mansion is now owned in trust by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and open to the public.

The porch is sheltered by a low roof supported by tree trunks or thick tree branches and thatched with grass or sticks. Located south of Phoenix and including the town of Sacaton, the Gila River Indian Reservation is home to members of the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and the Pee-Posh (Maricopa) tribes. The reservation was established in 1859. Eighty years later, in 1939, Congress provided for the self-governance of the reservation via the Gila River Indian Community.
