    Caption: "Millionaire Residences -- Los Angeles.," c. 1915-1916. Shows view from street of the "Magic Castle," a chateau-style residence built in 1909 by Rollin B. Lane. The building is now used as a night club and performance venue for magicians, and houses the Academy of Magical Arts. A mansion built by brothers Adolph and Eugene Bernheimer in 1914 can be seen on a hill above, displaying Asian influences in its architecture.

    Caption: "London Guarantee & Wrigley Bldg. Chicago," c. 1923. This photograph, taken at street level, features the London Guarantee Building (with the small cupola still under construction at its top) and the Wrigley Building (just to the right of the London Guarantee Building). The London Guarantee Building (also called the London Guaranty and Accident Building), designed by Alfred S. Alschuler, was completed in 1923. The Wrigley Building, constructed by the famous chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., consists of two towers. The south tower was completed in 1921, while the north tower was finished in 1924 (you can make out construction scaffolding on the top of the tower in this photograph).

    Caption: "The Arrival of the Atlantic Fleet at the Golden Gate -- May 6, 1908. San Francisco, California." and "Copyright 1908, Chas. Weidner, S.F." This photograph, by Charles Weidner, shows the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet, consisting of sixteen battle cruisers and various support vessels, steaming toward the Golden Gate and San Francisco Bay. President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the Atlantic Fleet (later called the "Great White Fleet" because the ships were painted white with gold trim) on a tour around the world, beginning in December 1907, to show American goodwill and also demonstrate the power of the U.S. Navy. The Fleet reached the Golden Gate, entrance to San Francisco Bay, on May 6, 1908.

William and Grace McCarthy driving over the newly-constructed Yolo Causeway, an elevated stretch of I-80 that connects what is now West Sacramento with Davis by traveling across the Yolo Bypass. The Yolo Causeway's official name is Blecher-Freeman Memorial Causeway.

    Caption: "Chief Manitou - Manitou Soda Springs," c. 1923. William McCarthy, wearing a Native American headdress and attire, stands next to Pedro Cajete. Mr. Cajete, better known to many as Chief Manitou, was a Native American of the Tewa tribe near Santa Fe, New Mexico, who was hired to promote tourism in the Manitou Springs/Colorado Springs area of Colorado. He often sold trinkets and posed for photographs with tourists near the mouth of Manitou Cave, resulting in his moniker Chief Manitou.

    Caption: "Saltair. Salt Lake." View of the first Saltair resort pavilion, constructed in 1893. Designed by Richard K.A. Kletting, the pavilion hovered above the Great Salt Lake on more than 2,000 posts and pilings. The resort was a popular spot for Mormon families, only fifteen miles from Salt Lake City and overseen by Church leaders. The Church sold the pavilion in 1906. It was later destroyed by fire in 1925.
