Caption: "Cliff House #2." View of the third Cliff House, of Victorian-style architecture, that was built on that site in San Francisco, c. 1906. The original Cliff House was built in 1858. The second was built in 1863 and was destroyed by fire on Christmas day in 1894. The third Victorian- style Cliff House (pictured) was completed in 1896, and although it survived the 1906 earthquake and fires, it burned to the ground in 1907. A fourth Cliff House was then built with steel-reinforced concrete and opened in 1909.

Caption: "Buriel [sic] of the U.S.S. Bennington Victims. -- Fort Rosecrans." Shows a grave site with dozens of caskets ready for burial. A priest and two altar boys stand at one side of the caskets, while a large group of U.S. Navy sailors looks on from the other side. While sailing from port in San Diego on the morning of July 21, 1905, the boiler of the USS Bennington exploded, killing sixty-six of her crew. The victims were laid to rest in the cemetery at Fort Rosecrans. See also 96-07-08-alb08-217.

Built in 1909 and designed by Benjamin Marshall, the twenty-one story Blackstone Hotel sits on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive in Chicago Illinois. It is the building closest to the left side of the photograph in this row of high-rises. See also 96-07-08-alb09-092.
