Caption: "Hollywood Hotel," c. 1915-1916. Façade of Hotel Hollywood, with automobile parked on street outside. The hotel, originally built in 1902 and expanded in 1905, served as a social venue for many of Hollywood's early film stars. It was torn down in 1956 to make way for an office building.

Each shelter has an accompanying space for an automobile. Small auto camps like this sprang up across the U.S. as the automobile gained popularity as tourist transportation.

Design and drawing of California State Building for Nevada Highways Exposition in Reno, Nevada, by Alfred Eichler, c. 1926; from packet of designs and plans by Eichler for the Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927. Built. Initial appropriation of $100,000 was reduced to $50,000, so only one half of the plan was built. The tower was eliminated.
