Caption: "Fort Stevens, OR," c. 1915. Panorama of Fort Stevens, built in the 1860s as part of the defensive fortifications guarding the mouth of the Columbia River. Located on the Oregon side of the river, the fort was decommissioned after World War II, its armaments and buildings removed and auctioned off. The site now serves as a state park complete with military museum.

Caption, c. 1905. Sixteen camels pull the Ringling Brothers Egyptian Circus Wagon down a street in Santa Rosa in this photograph. The Ringling Brothers Circus first came to Santa Rosa in 1903. The traveling circus became an annual event in the town for the next two decades.

Caption: "Ordnance Corps," c. 1905. A group photograph of the Ordnance Corps at the Benicia Arsenal. The broad mission of the Ordnance Corps was to supply combat weapons and ammunition to U.S. Army forces on the west coast of the United States.

Caption: "Refugee Hut," shows four people standing in the doorway of a hut built after the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906. Considered one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resulting fires killed an estimated 3,000 people and destroyed over 500 city blocks, leaving approximately 200,000 residents homeless.

Unidentified people enjoying the surf and beach at Ocean Beach, overlooked by the iconic San Francisco Cliff House. The Victorian structure shown here is the third iteration of the Cliff House, constructed in 1896. It was later destroyed by a fire, in 1907.

Caption: "Sugar Factory -- Chino Calif," c. 1915. Chino's sugar beet factory, shown in this photograph, was established in 1891 by Robert and Henry Oxnard. Henry later established a larger factory in the town that now bears his name (Oxnard, in Ventura County). The Chino factory operated for more than twenty-five years before closing in October 1917.

Caption: "Gatling Gun," c. 1905. William McCarthy sitting in the operator's position of a Gatling gun, an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.

Caption: "Mrs Eliza Smart and Family -- Chattahoochee, Florida, June 22, 34." Eliza Smart (standing in the back) and nine unidentified children, posing under a tree for the photograph. This is one of the few photographs in which the McCarthys identified the people who they met along their travels.
