    Caption: "Devils Gate -- Nevada -- Elevation 7540 Feet." Devil's Gate is a rock formation near Silver City, Nevada. In the nineteenth century a portion of the formation was blasted away to create enough space for a wagon road, which became a toll road serving as an entryway to the Nevada silver fields.

Held in Seattle to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest, the fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Several buildings constructed for the exposition now serve as part of the University of Washington campus.

    Caption: "Steamer Damara. On Rocks at Fort Point." On October 8, 1910, the British steam ship Damara, loaded with a cargo of barley bound for England, ran onto the rocks below Fort Point at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay. It took eleven days to refloat the ship.
