Caption: "A 3 inch Field Gun Ready for Action," c. 1915. Shows a crew of men operating a 3" field gun, a heavy artillery gun set onto a carriage for mobile use. The U.S. military used these guns between 1905 and 1919, gradually phasing them out of use during the 1920s in favor of more modern weapons.

Two unidentified men standing in front of a large barn or shed, with numerous barrels surrounding them, presumably for turpentine and other resin products. After being harvested from pine trees, resin is then subjected to steam distillation to evaporate off the turpentine.

No Caption: Santa Fe Depot, Stockton, California, c. 1906. The Santa Fe Depot (William Benson Storey, architect) was completed in 1899 for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the depot was renovated and restored it to its original design and reopened in 2005.

Caption: "Mission Cliff, San Diego.," c. 1905. View of the pavilion in San Diego's Mission Cliff Gardens. Originally opened in the 1880s as the "Bluffs" by the San Diego Cable Railway Company, the owners hoped to entice people to ride the cable cars by providing a recreational destination. The pavilion seen in the photograph was constructed in 1890. A few years later, the Citizens' Traction Company purchased the park and changed its name to Mission Cliff Park. In 1898, the property was sold yet again, this time to J.D. Spreckels and the San Diego Electric Railway Company. Spreckels hoped to transform the property into a quiet, restful, public botanical garden. The name changed again, to Mission Cliff Gardens, to reflect this change in direction for the park. The botanical gardens developed at the park became world-renowned before closing to the public in 1929. The property was subdivided in 1942, into residential lots.

Council Crest Park in Portland, Oregon was the site of an amusement park between 1907 and 1929. The buildings in this photograph were part of that park. The Observatory, built in 1907, was demolished in 1941 to make room for a water tower. The area is still in use as a municipal park.
