Caption: "Machinists' Headquarters, Fort Casey.," c. 1908-1912. View of building with gabled roof and sides sheathed in wood planks, with a small shed to the left and another small building to the right. Fort Casey was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. Construction began on the fort in 1897, and the U.S. Army used the facility until the 1950s, when the fort was decommissioned. The area is now a state park.

Caption: "Ver De Leu [sic], Santa Cruz," c. 1910. Ocean shore scene with rocks, waves, and high spray. The Vue de L'eau (View of the Water) was a station on the Santa Cruz, Garfield Park and Capitola Electric Railway electric streetcar line. The station, built in 1891, was located at the very end of the line, on a promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It featured an observatory on the top story. The same company also built a casino, ballroom, and restaurant nearby. The station burned down in 1925.

Caption: "French 75 Millimeter Gun Model of 1897." c. 1912-1915. William McCarthy posing with a French 75mm field gun, with an unidentified man. Commonly called the French 75, or simply the 75, this heavy, rapid-fire artillery gun was developed in 1897. During World War I it was adapted to fire shells full of toxic gas, and was also modified for mounting on an armored vehicle. See also 96-07-08-alb05-061.

Caption: "Glacier Point - Over Hanging Rock - Yosemite Falls In The Distance," c. 1935. A group of unidentified people looking out from Glacier Point. Both Upper and Lower Yosemite Fall are visible across the valley at the right side of the photograph. Glacier Point, on the south wall of the valley 3,200 feet above what is now known as Half Dome Village, provides panoramic views of the valley and many of its features. By the time this photograph was taken, safety railings had been installed at the Point to prevent visitors from tumbling over the cliff while trying to get the best views.

Caption: "Echo Park [sic] Los Angeles," c. 1906. Unidentified man leaning on a railing made of tree branches, with palm trees and other vegetation in the background. Echo Lake Park opened in 1895. The lake was originally created in 1868 to support the operations of a mill. The mill, however, closed seven years later. The site was later selected for conversion to a city park.

Caption: "Art Museum - Los Angeles," c. 1915. Located in Exposition Park, the Beaux Arts building, opened in 1913, was originally known as the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science, and Art. In 1963, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art moved to its current location on Wilshire Blvd. The Exposition Park facility became the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. After two years of renovation and restoration, it was reopened in 2009.
