Caption: "Carquinez Bridge, Crockett, California. Oct. 9, 1934." This photograph shows the original Carquinez Bridge, built to span the Carquinez Strait and thereby contribute to a direct route between Sacramento and San Francisco. The steel cantilevered bridge, designed by Robinson & Steinman, was constructed in 1927. It is no longer extant, having been replaced by two parallel bridges constructed in 1958 and 2003. The structure of the original bridge was removed in 2007. See also 96-07-08-alb04-004.

Caption: "Fort Townsend," c. 1906. Park-like scene, with buildings in the distance and a flag pole at the right. The U.S. Army established Fort Townsend in 1856. Abandoned after a fire destroyed the barracks buildings in 1895, it was reactivated during World War II to serve as a munitions defusing station. It was turned over to the State of Washington in 1953, and is now in use as Fort Townsend State Park.

Caption: "Fine Arts Bldg. of Worlds Fair in 1893 - Jackson Park - Chicago," c. 1923. The Palace of Fine Arts building shown in this photograph was originally constructed for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. After the fair's completion, the building housed the Columbian Museum, which eventually became the Field Museum of Natural History. In 1920, that museum moved to a new building, and the Palace of Fine Arts building was left vacant. After renovations in the late 1920s, the Museum of Science and Industry opened at the site.

Caption: "6 inch Howitzers -- Camp Kearney," c. 1917. View of several 6" Howitzers, as well as several outbuildings and a line of artillery weapons under canvas covers. William McCarthy is standing next to the middle Howitzer. Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s.
