A wall of timber shores up part of one side of the canyon wall in the distance. The Denver and Rio Grande (D&RG) primarily operated railroad lines between Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah, with other lines stretching into New Mexico.

The French Renaissance style building, designed by architect John McComb, Jr., was constructed between 1803 and 1811. The statue Civic Virtue Triumphant Over Unrighteousness (Frederick William MacMonnies, sculptor) stands in front of the building. The statue, unveiled in 1922, has subsequently been moved. It now stands in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery.
