    Caption: "Old State Capitol, Benicia," c. 1906. California's State Capitol moved several times in the first decade of statehood. This photograph shows the third building to serve as the Capitol building, in Benicia. The California State Legislature occupied the building from 1853-1854, until lack of accommodations for the legislators prompted the moving of the Capitol to Sacramento, in February 1854.

    Caption: "Pine Trees Yielding Turpentine, Rosin [sic], Etc. Florida, July 13, 1934." A group of pine trees with bark removed in a "V"-shaped, or "catface" pattern to encourage production of resin, from which turpentine is made. Small buckets hang at the end of each "V" to catch the resin. This turpentine farm may actually be in Georgia, rather than Florida.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the depot was renovated and restored it to its original design, and reopened in 2005.

    Caption: "California Here We Come. Donner Monument. In Our Home State Again After Five Months Tour. October 7, 1934." William and Grace McCarthy took this photograph of the Pioneer Monument when they arrived back in California after a five month road trip to the East Coast. The Pioneer Monument, featuring a pair of pioneers with their two children looking west, was first dedicated on June 6, 1918 to commemorate those who emigrated to California in the mid 1800s. Today, the monument and surrounding area is known as Donner Memorial State Park. The park was established in memory of the ill-fated Donner Party, a group of emigrants whose wagon train was caught in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the winter of 1846-47. The Pioneer Monument's stone pedestal stands twenty-two feet high, the height of the snow that the party had to contend with. Of the eighty-seven people in the wagon train, only forty-eight survived to be rescued the following spring. Some of the survivors are said to have resorted to cannibalism in order to survive.

    Caption: "El Portal," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy poses with two unidentified people in front of the Hotel del Portal (or Del Portal Hotel) in El Portal, California. The resort hotel was constructed in 1908 by the Yosemite Terminal Company, a subsidiary of the Yosemite Valley Railroad Company, to provide accommodations for visitors to the park who arrived by train. The hotel burned to the ground in late October of 1917.

    Caption: "High School -- San Diego," c. 1910. By 1902 San Diego's schools had become overcrowded enough to warrant the construction of a new high school building. Completed in 1907 and designed by F.S. Allen, the new building was quickly nicknamed the "Grey Castle on the Hill" in reference to its castle-like parapets and towers. The Grey Castle was torn down in 1975 to make way for a facility in compliance with new earthquake safety laws.
