    Caption: "Frances [sic] Tavern, New York. Where Washington Took Leave of Offices and Disbanded the Troops at Conclusion of the Revolutionary [sic] War. Aug. 5, 1934." Built as a family home for Etienne "Stephen" DeLancey in 1719, this building was converted to use as a tavern in 1762. It served many important functions before, during, and after the Revolutionary War, but several fires in the nineteenth century erased the building's original appearance. The Sons of the Revolution purchased the property in 1904 and embarked upon extensive restoration plans in 1907, supervised by William Mersereau. The building is now used as a museum and art gallery.

    Caption: "U. S. 10" Gun, Firing Position.," c. 1905. William McCarthy standing next to a 10" disappearing gun, raised to its firing position. Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire.

    Caption: "Where Automobile Races are Held on Hard Sandy Beach, Daytona Beach, Florida. July 9, 1934." This photograph illustrates the wide, hard-packed sands of the beach at Daytona Beach, used by early motorists as a race track and testing ground for new vehicles. Bathers enjoy the surf to the left, while many automobiles are visible in the rest of the photograph.

    Caption: "French 75 Millimeter Gun In Action," c. 1912-1915. Commonly called the French 75, or simply the 75, this heavy, rapid-fire artillery gun was developed in 1897. During World War I it was adapted to fire shells full of toxic gas, and was also modified for mounting on an armored vehicle. See also 96-07-08-alb05-060.
