The Temple was built in 1899-1900 at the west end of the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park. A gift to the City of San Francisco from sugar magnate Claus Spreckels, the Temple has been extensively renovated over the years to repair earthquake damage.

Caption: "Montauk Lighthouse, Most Northern Point on Long Island, N.Y., Aug. 18, 1934." The Montauk Lighthouse, first lit in 1797, was the first lighthouse built in New York. Ezra L'Hommedieu designed the building as well as choosing its site on the eastern edge of Long Island. A renovation in 1860 raised the lighthouse to its current height of more than 110 feet. A larger lantern was installed at that time as well. Electrified in 1940, it is now a National Historic Landmark as well as an active lighthouse.

Caption: "Hotel-Saint Francis," c. 1913. St. Francis Hotel at Union Square with partial north wing extension and the Dewey Monument in the foreground (Robert I. Aitken, sculptor), which commemorated U.S. Admiral George Dewey's naval victory at the battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War of 1898. The luxury hotel opened in 1904 and, fortunately, suffered little damage from the 1906 earthquake. It was expanded in 1913, and 1972, making it one of the largest hotels in the city.

Caption: "Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Fla. July 10, 1934." William McCarthy standing in front of a corner tower on the ramparts of Castillo de San Marcos (Castle of Saint Mark). The core structures of this coastal defense fort were completed by Spanish forces in 1695. Numerous additions, renovations, and repairs have occurred since that time. When Spain ceded Florida to the U.S. in 1821, the Castillo was designated a U.S. Army base and renamed Fort Marion, in honor of Frances Marion (also known as the Swamp Fox, Marion was an American Revolutionary War hero known for his guerilla war tactics). The fort was deactivated in 1933, and turned over to the National Park Service.
