No Caption: Interior shot of the Sutro Baths, north of the Cliff House, c. 1910. Designed by Adolph Sutro in 1894, the bathhouses at one time covered three oceanfront acres just north of Ocean Beach and the Cliff House. Eventually, the Sutro Baths fell into disrepair and what was left of them burned down in 1966. Since 1973, the concrete ruins have been part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Caption: "A.Y.P.E. Entrance." See also 96-07-08-alb08-121. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was held in Seattle, Washington in 1909 to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest. The fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Although most of the fair's buildings have since been destroyed, several of them now serve as part of the University of Washington campus.

Caption: "Fort Whitman, Wash," c. 1910. View of Goat Island in Puget Sound, Washington. Goat Island was the location of Fort Whitman, a small coastal defense fortification built in 1909. The fort consisted of a single battery and a mine field patrol and observation outpost. The buildings were torn down in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

Caption: "Botanical Garden - St. Louis," c. 1923. View of the Palm House, built in 1915 to house tropical plants in the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. It was torn down in 1959 to make room for the domed geodesic Climatron building which still stands at the site. See also 96-07-08-alb04-091.

Caption: "City Hall, San Francisco.," c. 1925. View of the Beaux Arts-style building that replaced San Francisco's City Hall after the original building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Designed by architect Arthur Brown, Jr., the building occupies two full city blocks. See also 96-07-08-alb09-005, 96-07-08-alb10-001, and 96-07-08-alb11-001.

Caption: "Oregon Caves Chateau," c. 1935. The Oregon Caves National Monument was established in 1909. The Oregon Caves Chateau, built in the rustic style (Gust Lium, architect), opened in 1934. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.

Caption: "Nudist Colony - San Diego Exposition," c. 1935. The Zoro Garden Nudist Colony, named for the Persian mystic, Zoroaster, was an unusual and controversial attraction that featured partially nude men and women performing as nudists. Exposition visitors were charged twenty-five cents to watch the "nudists" perform ceremonies and other activities. Today, the sunken Zoro Garden in Balboa Park is a butterfly garden.

Caption: "Lancaster Battery, Presidio," c. 1906, shows a distant view of Lancaster Battery. Established in 1776 by Spanish explorers, the Presidio is a fortified location overlooking the Golden Gate, the entrance into San Francisco Bay. It was closed as a military structure in 1995, and is now a park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

No Caption: A 1935 three-cent U.S. Postage stamp, featuring Boulder Dam, now known as Hoover Dam, which was constructed between 1931 and 1936. The concrete arch-gravity dam is located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River on the border between Clark County, Nevada, and Mojave County, Arizona. A National Historic Landmark, the dam provides hydroelectric power, water storage, flood control, and recreation at Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam's construction.

Caption: "Glacier Point - Overhanging Rock," c. 1935. Grace McCarthy poses for a photograph at Glacier Point's iconic overhanging rock. Glacier Point, on the south wall of the valley 3,200 feet above what is now known as Half Dome Village, provides panoramic views of the valley and many of its features. By the time this photograph was taken, safety railings had been installed at the Point to prevent visitors from tumbling over the cliff while trying to get the best views.
