Caption: "George Washingtons [sic] Tomb, Mount Vernon, Virginia, July 22, 1934." The gated entrance to the tomb holding the remains of George Washington are seen in this photograph, overgrown by ivy. Two unidentified people stand at either side of the entry. The brick tomb was constructed after Washington's death in 1799.

Caption: "Indian Wigwam," c. 1935. William and Grace McCarthy pose at the entrance to what William labeled a "wigwam," a dwelling of the Ahwahnechee people. The Ahwahnechee (a Native American tribe who traditionally occupied the Yosemite Valley) called the dwellings o-chum. Pine branches were arranged in a tee-pee-like shape and then covered with layered slabs of cedar bark.

Caption: "The Battery, Lower Manhattan, New York, N.Y [sic], Aug. 4, 1934." This photograph shows the Manhattan skyline, as well as the Battery, a 25-acre park at the tip of Manhattan Island. The park was named for the artillery batteries that used to protect the city and its harbor from this location.

No Caption: 1935. The Zoro Garden Nudist Colony, named for the Persian mystic, Zoroaster, was an unusual and controversial attraction that featured partially nude men and women performing as nudists. Exposition visitors were charged twenty-five cents to watch the "nudists" perform ceremonies and other activities. Today, the sunken Zoro Garden in Balboa Park is a butterfly garden.

Caption: Eureka Court House, CAL. Eureka Population 1500," c. 1935. The Eureka County Courthouse was completed in 1889 (Curtis and Bennett, architects) in the Italianate style. The building survived several fires and earthquakes with some damage. It was condemned in 1956 and subsequently demolished to build a new, more modern facility.

Caption: "City Hall, San Francisco, Population in San Francisco 750,000, May 21, 1935." The date with which the photograph was labeled (May 21, 1935) does not appear to be accurate. The date is more likely circa 1925. See also 96-07-08-alb09-003 and 005, and 96-07-08-alb11-001.

Caption: "Zion Canyon - Zion National Park - view from Temple of Sinawava," c. 1935. The Temple of Sinwava, a massive natural amphitheater marks the beginning of Zion Canyon. A paved trail following the Virgin River upstream leads through ever narrowing sandstone canyons to the Zion Narrows.

Caption: "Agua Caliente Mexico, May 20, 34." View of an elaborate large arch over a roadway, pointing the way to Hotel Agua Caliente in Tijuana. The Agua Caliente Casino and Resort Hotel, designed by Wayne McAllister, opened in Tijuana in 1928. The resort closed only a few years later, in 1935, when Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed gambling.

Caption: "Morro Castle -- Havana -- Cuba. July 4, 1934." Morro Castle, also called Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro, has guarded the entrance to Havana's harbor since 1589. Various additions have been built over the years, including the Faro Castillo del Morro Lighthouse, added in 1846. Morro Castle currently houses the offices of the Havana Harbormaster, and operates as a museum.
