No caption, c. 1917. William McCarthy standing next to a 6" Howitzer at Camp Kearney. Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s.

Depicts a temporary memorial of some kind, possibly a funeral arrangement, with a cloth canopy over a podium upon which sits a covered table or small casket, with a cross and decorative flowers and palm fronds. Stairs leading to the podium are bracketed by small pedestals topped by vases holding American flags.

Caption: "Blackstone Hotel - Michigan Ave. Chicago," c. 1923. Built in 1909 and designed by Benjamin Marshall, the twenty-one story Blackstone Hotel sits on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive in Chicago Illinois. It is the building closest to the left side of the photograph in this row of high-rises. See also 96-07-08-alb04-074.

Caption: "Crown Point.," c. 1920. Shows the Vista House, built in 1918 as a memorial to Oregon's pioneers. Designed by Edgar M. Lazarus, it sits atop Crown Point, a rocky promontory overlooking the Columbia River gorge, along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Caption: "A Typical Italian Refugee Camp," c. 1906. Makeshift hut with four unidentified men standing in doorway. After the earthquake and fire that destroyed much of San Francisco in April 1906, hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. Many of these people established temporary refugee camps, using debris from the destruction to cobble together shelters.

Caption: "Hollywood.," c. 1915. Street scene in Hollywood, California. The Hotel Hollywood is visible at the left side of the photograph. The hotel, originally built in 1902 and expanded in 1905, served as a social venue for many of Hollywood's early film stars. It was torn down in 1956 to make way for an office building.

Caption: "Dwellings on Malecon Boulevard -- Havana. July 4, 1934." The Malecón is a broad esplanade and seawall that extends approximately five miles from Old Havana to the mouth of Havana's harbor. Construction began on the Malecón in 1901, and continued until the early 1950s. This photograph shows several buildings along the Malecón.

Caption: "St. James Cathedral - Montreal," c. 1925. The St. James Cathedral in Montreal was consecrated in 1894. At that time, it was the largest church in Quebec. Pope Pious XII rededicated the church in 1955 to Mary, Queen of the World. See also 96-07-08-alb04-092.
