Caption: "Steamer MINNESOTA," c. 1909. View of the steamship Minnesota II, built in 1903. She was said to be the largest U.S. merchant ship afloat at the time. Operated by the Great Northern Steamship Company, she sailed between the U.S. and markets in Asia until 1915. In 1917 the Minnesota II began operating in the Atlantic between the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The U.S. Navy commissioned her as a troop ship in 1919, changing her name to Troy. She brought over 14,000 U.S. troops home from war-torn Europe. She never resumed active service after this, being scrapped in 1923. See also 96-07-08-alb08-111.

Caption: "Review, Fort Worden.," c. 1908-1912. Shows a military band playing or preparing to play, with rows of troops assembled in the background on the right side of the photograph. Fort Worden is located in Port Townsend, Washington, on Admiralty Inlet of Puget Sound. Construction began on the fort in 1898, and by 1902 it was serving as an active U.S. Army base. Fort Worden was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. The U.S. sold the property to the State of Washington in 1957. In 1973, the fort and surrounding area opened as Fort Worden State Park.

Caption: "Gatling Gun," c. 1905. William McCarthy sitting in the operator's position of a Gatling gun, an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.

No Caption: The photograph has a hand-written inscription stating: "Portola Electric Bell Copyright 1909 Pillsbury Picture Co. No. 800." Installed on the intersection of Third and Market Streets in San Francisco, the Portola Electric Bell contained two thousand bulbs and rose 125 feet above the street. It was part of the Portola Festival of 1909, a grand celebration devised to commemorate the discovery of San Francisco Bay by Gaspar De Portola, and for the public to celebrate the future of the rebuilt city after the 1906 earthquake and fires.

Caption: "Portola. King & Queen." Actors portraying explorer Gaspar de Portolà and Queen Vergilia in a parade, part of the San Francisco Portola Festival held October 19-23, 1909. The festival celebrated Portolà as the discoverer of San Francisco Bay. It was held annually until 1913. See also 96-07-08-alb06-162.
