    Caption: "INDIAN over 100 years old," c. 1905. Elderly man, possibly of Native American ethnicity, standing in front of a barn. Taken around 1905 in San Diego near the Old Mission, If William McCarthy's description is accurate, this person was born while California was under Spanish rule. Possibly of the Kumeyaay tribe, whose members had lived in the area long before the Spanish arrived, he may have lived and worked at Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá (Mission San Diego) or at a nearby Indian village.

    Caption: "Government exhibits of clothing, Government Building." This exhibit demonstrates a variety of military uniforms, displayed on mannequins. It was located in the Government Building of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, held in Portland, Oregon from June 1st to October 15th, 1905. It celebrated the one-hundred year anniversary of the exploratory expedition of the Louisiana Purchase and what became the northwestern part of the United States, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Some 1.6 million people visited the fair, viewing exhibits from twenty-one countries.

St. Francis Hotel at Union Square with partial north wing extension and the Dewey Monument in the foreground (Robert I. Aitken, sculptor), which commemorated U.S. Admiral George Dewey's naval victory at the battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War of 1898. The luxury hotel opened in 1904 and, fortunately, suffered little damage from the 1906 earthquake. It was expanded in 1913, and 1972, making it one of the largest hotels in the city.

William (standing in front to the right) and Grace (third from the left in the wagon) McCarthy and a group of unidentified people all holding bunches of grapes, either getting ready for or coming back from a ride in a horse-drawn wagon. Skaggs Springs was a resort area along the Russian River in Sonoma County, known for its hot springs. The area now lies beneath the waters of Lake Sonoma, flooded after construction of the Warm Springs Dam, completed in 1982.

    No Caption: Grace McCarthy is seen standing near the entrance of the Hotel Virginia, on Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach, California. The luxury hotel was opened in 1908 by Col. Charles Rivers Drake, a Civil War veteran and early Long Beach developer. During the Great Depression, the hotel suffered the fate of many businesses during that time and closed its doors in October of 1932.
