Caption: "Devil's Kitchen," c. 1923. This photograph shows several people descending into and standing around the entry to Devil's Kitchen, an extinct hot spring that left behind a cavern. Once a popular tourist attraction for its small opening that made visitors feel as if they were descending into the underworld, the site was closed in 1939 because the cavern periodically fills with dangerous levels of carbon dioxide.

Pictured is the interior of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, with the famous mural, Man at the Crossroads, painted by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. The work was originally commissioned for New York's Rockefeller Center in 1933 but was destroyed for its perceived anti-capitalist themes. Rivera recreated it for the Palace of Fine Arts in 1934.

William and Grace McCarthy (at the far right) having drinks with three unidentified men in Sloppy Joe's Bar, a drinking establishment owned by Jose Garcia. American tourists flocked to the bar in the 1930s and 1940s, as it attracted illustrious visitors such as John Wayne and Clark Gable. The bar was closed in 1959 after the Cuban revolution.

Caption: "San Francisco April 18, 1906. Center of Town. The Awful Fire after the Shake." Shows much smoke with buildings on fire in the center of the city, after the earthquake. Considered one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resulting fires killed an estimated 3,000 people and destroyed over 500 city blocks, leaving approximately 200,000 residents homeless.
