Caption: "Gatling gun," c. 1905. three unidentified men and William McCarthy (third from right) stand near a Gatling gun. The Gatling gun was an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.

Caption: "Washington Monument - Fairmount Park - Philadelphia," c. 1925. Philadelphia's Washington Monument Fountain (Rudolf Siemering, sculptor) features a bronze and granite statute of George Washington on horseback. Dedicated at Fairmount Park in 1897, it was moved to Philadelphia's Eakins Oval in 1928.

Caption: "Washington State Capitol -- Olympia.," c. 1920. Also known as The Castle, this building served as Washington's state capitol building from 1905 to 1928, when the Legislature moved into the current building. The central tower of The Castle was lost in a 1928 fire, while numerous other towers fell to the 1949 Olympia earthquake. Some of those towers have been restored.

Caption: "Brothers Light House" and "Scenes on the Sacramento River.," c. 1920. Shows the island and structures associated with the East Brother Island Lighthouse, lit in 1874 in San Rafael Bay near Richmond, California. The light was automated in 1969. After restoration in the early 1980s, the lighthouse now operates as a bed-and-breakfast.

Caption: "Wreck on the Vallejo Napa Line." Photograph showing some of the train cars involved in a June 19, 1913 accident in which two trains of the San Francisco, Napa Valley and Calistoga Railroad collided head-on approximately 2.4 miles north of Vallejo. Ten passengers and three railroad employees were killed, and twenty-eight others injured.

No Caption: View of a garden at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. Held in Seattle to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest, the fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Although most of the fair's buildings have since been destroyed, several of them now serve as part of the University of Washington campus.

Caption: "City Hall -- Miami -- Florida, June 30 1934." This photograph depicts the Miami-Dade County Courthouse (not Miami's City Hall). Designed by architect A. Ten Eyck Brown, the Courthouse was constructed between 1925-1928. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in Florida.

Caption: "Crater Lake - Arrow indicates Watchman Point," c. 1935. Located in the Crater Lake National Park, Crater Lake is a caldera lake formed about 7,700 years ago by the collapse of the volcano, Mount Mazama. Its 1,949 foot depth makes it the deepest lake in the United States.
