Caption: "Detail of Tower." Design and drawing by Alfred Eichler. Built in 1930. This was one of the first border stations and was situated in desert country; its purpose was to provide a stopping place for inspection of motor traffic coming into California in order to enforce quarantine against insect infestation of California agricultural products. Caption: "Emerald Pool Yellowstone," c. 1923. Grace McCarthy (fourth from the right) and several unidentified people admire Emerald Pool in Yellowstone National Park. The pool, sometimes called Emerald Spring, is located in the park's Black Sand Basin. Yellow sulphur deposits, combined with the blue of the water, give the pool a vivid green color.

Caption: "Padre Junipero Sierra [sic] Monument. Monterey," c. 1915, shows a monument commemorating the Spanish Franciscan priest, Father Junipero Serra, who led the founding and construction of the Spanish Mission system in Alta California during the Spanish era. The monument was commissioned and erected in 1891 by Jane Stanford of Stanford University and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Caption: "Del Monte.," c. 1920. William and Grace McCarthy standing with an automobile in front of the Hotel Del Monte. The second of three hotels built on the site, near Monterey, California, the building in this photograph was destroyed by fire in 1924. The property surrounding the hotel became known as Pebble Beach, now a world-renowned resort and golf course.

Eliza Smart (standing, on the left), two unidentified women, and nine children posing on the porch of a house with wood siding. This is one of the few photographs in which the McCarthys identified some of the people who they met along their travels.
