Caption: "Coronado Tent City.," c. 1910. Beach scene near the Coronado Hotel, showing groups of people enjoying a day at the sea shore. Established in 1900 for travelers who could not afford to stay in the resort hotel, the Coronado Tent City consisted of a grid of streets lined with furnished tents, near the sea shore. It also featured restaurants, a library, soda fountain, theater, bandstand, and other recreational facilities.

Caption: "California," c, 1917. The McCarthy's vehicle is squeezed into the tunnel carved through the California Tree, a Giant Sequoia in the Mariposa Grove of Yosemite National Park. The tunnel was cut through the tree in 1895 to facilitate travel on the road into the grove, and also as a tourist attraction. It is now the only living Giant Sequoia with a tunnel cut through it (so-called "tunnel trees"), the others having all fallen.

Caption: "Eagle River D. & R. G. R. R," c. 1923. Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks run next to the Eagle River at the bottom of a canyon in this photograph. A wall of timber shores up part of one side of the canyon wall in the distance. The Denver and Rio Grande (D&RG) primarily operated railroad lines between Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah, with other lines stretching into New Mexico.

The date on this photograph may not be accurate, as several of the vehicles shown appear to date from later in the 1930s.

Caption: "Skaggs Springs," c. 1914. William and Grace McCarthy (fourth and fifth from the left) standing on a log with a group of unidentified friends and family in the Skaggs Springs area of Sonoma County. Skaggs Springs was a resort area along the Russian River, known for its hot springs. The area now lies beneath the waters of Lake Sonoma, flooded after construction of the Warm Springs Dam, completed in 1982.

Caption: "Mammoth Springs Resort. - Yellowstone," c. 1923. William and Grace McCarthy pose in front of the Mammoth Springs Resort with three unidentified people. Originally called the National Hotel, the building opened for business in 1883. It underwent significant alterations and renovations between 1911 and 1913, by which time the resort was known as the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. The hotel was torn down in 1936 in favor of a more modern facility.

Caption: "Pasadena," c. 1915, shows the Hotel Green, built by George Gill Green in 1893, and expanded by him in 1898 and 1903 with two additional structures. The hotel complex was sold to private investors and by 1924, the 1898 Central Annex structure (Frederick L. Roehrig, architect) was turned into apartments and renamed the Castle Green. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register of Historic Places, and the City of Pasadena's list of historic places.

Caption: "Blue Rock Springs - Solano Co." c. 1915. In the 1860s, White Sulphur Springs (in the vicinity of Vallejo) was developed for use as a mineral springs resort, featuring a hotel, several cottages, and an "amusement" building with a dance floor, bar, and billiard room. Manuel Madrid obtained the property around the turn of the twentieth century, and changed the name to Blue Rock Springs. The area is now managed by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District as Blue Rock Springs Park.

No Caption: Educational Building on the left, with Tower of Jewels in the background, at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, 1915. The Panama Pacific International Exposition was held to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, as well as inventive technologies and new industries from around the world. It was also a chance for San Francisco to show the world how the great city had rebuilt and thrived after the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Caption: "San Diego Fair Grounds." and "39-9, U.S. Naval Training Station, Balboa Park, San Diego," c. 1917. With the advent of World War I, the U.S. Navy needed additional training grounds for sailors. In 1917, the City of San Diego offered to lease the Navy a portion of Balboa Park as a temporary training site until a new, more permanent facility could be constructed. This postcard shows groups of sailors drilling in formation while a small crowd watches.
