No caption, c. 1915. Twelve-inch disappearing coastal defense gun, showing the breech of the barrel where shells are loaded and ejected. Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire.

Caption: "Hollywood Hotel," c. 1915-1916. Façade of Hotel Hollywood, with automobile parked on street outside. The hotel, originally built in 1902 and expanded in 1905, served as a social venue for many of Hollywood's early film stars. It was torn down in 1956 to make way for an office building.

The Victorian Gothic-style building, often referred to as a "castle," was designed by J. Wrey Mould. It opened in 1877. Later expansions added to the complex around this building and have disguised much of it from view.

Washington Park Lake, a portion of which is seen in this photograph, was created by damming Beaverkill Creek in 1873. The Lake House in the photograph was constructed in 1929, replacing an earlier building.
