No caption, c. 1915. Twelve-inch disappearing coastal defense gun, showing the breech of the barrel where shells are loaded and ejected. Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire.

Built between 1848 and 1888 to commemorate George Washington (former Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and first President of the United States), the obelisk is the world's tallest stone structure at a height of 555 feet. Caption: "Portola Celebration,"1909. The Portola Festival of 1909 was a grand celebration devised to commemorate the discovery of San Francisco Bay by Gaspar De Portola, and for the public to celebrate the future of the rebuilt city after the 1906 earthquake and fires.

Caption: "Hollywood Hotel," c. 1915-1916. Façade of Hotel Hollywood, with automobile parked on street outside. The hotel, originally built in 1902 and expanded in 1905, served as a social venue for many of Hollywood's early film stars. It was torn down in 1956 to make way for an office building.

Caption: "Mount Hood, Oregon, Elev. 11225 ft. View from Buzzard Point," c. 1935. Mount Hood is a potentially active volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of the Cascade Range in the Clackamas and Hood River counties of northern Oregon. The last eruption of Mount Hood was in 1907.

View of Horseshoe Falls, largest of the three waterfalls that make up the iconic Niagara Falls straddling the border between Ontario, Canada, and the State of New York. At the right side of the photograph is a parking area with groups of tourists taking in the view.

Caption: "Museum of Natural History N.Y.," c. 1925. View of the original building of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Victorian Gothic-style building, often referred to as a "castle," was designed by J. Wrey Mould. It opened in 1877. Later expansions added to the complex around this building and have disguised much of it from view.

Caption: "Washington Park, Albany, New York, Sept. 8, 1934." Albany's Washington Park was established in the early 1870s. Washington Park Lake, a portion of which is seen in this photograph, was created by damming Beaverkill Creek in 1873. The Lake House in the photograph was constructed in 1929, replacing an earlier building.
