Caption: "Leevining [sic] Grade -- Tioga Road." The Lee Vining Grade is on the eastern side of Tioga Pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Mono County, California, northeast of Yosemite Valley. It constitutes part of the Tioga Road, or Tioga Pass Road, now part of California State Route 120. The Grade is visible in the photograph as a thin line running along the mountain sides in the lower third of the image.

Caption: "Notre Dame College. South Bend, Indiana. Sept. 14, 1734 [sic], Sept. 14, 1934." Founded in 1842 and officially chartered in 1844, the University of Notre Dame is a Catholic research university famous world-wide for the quality of the education it provides. This photograph shows the Main Building's domed tower, (just to the right of center), and the steeple of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (center), the university's on-site Catholic Church.

Caption: "Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition," "Agricultural Building" and "A.Y.P.E. Seattle Wash." View of the Agricultural Building of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, often referred to as the "A-Y-P." Held in Seattle to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest, the fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Although most of the fair's buildings have since been destroyed, several of them now serve as part of the University of Washington campus.

Caption: "Yosemite Falls - View From Glacier Point," c. 1917. Yosemite Falls in the distance, as seen from Glacier Point. The highest waterfall in Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Falls is made up of two successive cascades falling a total of 2,425 feet from the top of the Upper Fall to the base of the Lower Fall. The Upper Fall alone is 1,430 feet high, and is one of the top twenty highest waterfalls in the world.

Caption: "Sutters [sic] Fort - Sacramento," c. 1920, shows a gun tower at Sutter's Fort, and a gate bracketed by two cannons. John Sutter established the fort in 1839, calling it New Helvetia. After the discovery of gold at one of Sutter's mills (at Coloma, on the American River), almost all of the fort's inhabitants left for the gold fields in the foothills. The fort deteriorated until being restored from 1891-1893. The Native Sons of the Golden West were influential in the restoration. The fort is now the site of a State Historic Park. Caption: "George Washington Monument, Washington, D.C. July 29, 1934." The obelisk of the Washington Monument rises above the Reflecting Pool on National Mall in Washington, D.C. Built between 1848 and 1888 to commemorate George Washington (former Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and first President of the United States), the obelisk is the world's tallest stone structure at a height of 555 feet.

Caption: "Santa Fe Depot. San Diego, Cal, July 18, 1915," shows the Santa Fe Depot (Arthur Brown Jr, architect), in the Mission Revival architectural style. The train station opened in March 1915 to accommodate the crowds expected to visit the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego that year. The depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Caption: Art Museum - St. Louis," c. 1923. The Saint Louis Art Museum features elements of the Greek Revival style. It began life as the Palace of Fine Arts for the World's Fair held in St. Louis in 1904. The museum moved into the building after the fair's completion.
