    Caption: "San Jacinto Battle Ground -- Tex, June 11 34." View of the gated entry to the San Jacinto Battleground. The site was the location of the Battle of San Jacinto, in which the Texan Army (led by Sam Houston) defeated the Mexican army (led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna), paving the way for the formation of the Republic of Texas. A Texas Historic Site, the battleground was also declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.

    Caption: "The Fairmont," c. 1906. View of the Fairmont Hotel, a luxury hotel in San Francisco. Although construction was mostly finished in 1906, the advent of the San Francisco earthquake and fire of that year damaged the hotel's interior and delayed opening until 1907. It was the first hotel in what is now the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain. In 1945, the San Francisco hotel was host to an international conference that culminated in the formation of the United Nations.

    Caption: "The Bennington." View of the USS Bennington, a U.S. Navy gunboat, Yorktown class, launched in 1890. She had tours of duty in South America, the Mediterranean, North and Central America, Hawaii, and the Philippines. On July 21, 1905, while in San Diego Harbor, the Bennington's boiler exploded, killing sixty-six men and injuring many more. This photograph appears to have been taken after the explosion.

    Caption: "In Memory of Florida Confederates, Memorial Monument -- Pensacola Florida, June 21, 34." Photograph of the pillar and statue erected in Pensacola's Lee Square in 1891, memorializing "the Uncrowned Heroes of the Southern Confederacy" and Confederate leaders such as Jefferson Davis. Two low pyramids made up of cannon balls bracket the monument. As of the time of this writing (November 2017), controversy swirls around efforts to remove the memorial.
