Visible above the entrance to the chambers of the House of Representatives is a mural painted by Gerard Hale and Gilbert White entitled Reclaiming the Desert for Irrigation.

    Caption: "Vancouver Hotel, Vancouver, B.C.," c. 1908-1912. View of the Hotel Vancouver, designed by architect T.C. Sorly for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). This photograph shows the first building on the site, which opened in 1888. By 1916, the area had grown so much that the CPR razed this building and constructed a new, larger, more modern facility.

    Caption: "Main [sic] Memorial, ial [sic -- cut off in original photograph] Monument and National Hotel. Havana. July 4, 34." Designed by McKim, Mead and White, the Hotel Nacional in Havana opened in 1930. In the foreground is the Monument to the Victims of the USS Maine, two columns topped by an eagle with outstretched wings, built in 1925 to memorialize the American sailors who died in an explosion on the USS Maine in 1898. The eagle and other features of the monument were removed in 1961 as symbols of imperialism.

    Caption: "Lower Falls - Yellowstone," c. 1923. This photograph features the massive Lower Yellowstone Falls, as seen from the falls' base. A group of unidentified people standing to one side provides some sense of scale. As the Yellowstone River flows north from Yellowstone Lake it passes over two waterfalls (Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls) before reaching the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. The 308-foot Lower Yellowstone Falls carries more water volume than any other waterfall in the Rocky Mountains.

    Caption: "Stanley Park Vancouver B.C.," c. 1908-1912. Shows a pond with central fountain, surrounded by lush vegetation including evergreen trees. A group of people stands at the pond's edge in the distance. The City of Vancouver opened Stanley Park in 1888. The 405-hectare park is even now thickly forested, and remains Vancouver's largest park. It is located on the northern edge of the city, surrounded on three sides by Vancouver Harbor and English Bay.
