Caption: "Olvera St. Mexican Market Place, Los Angeles, May 18, 1934." View of the Olvera Street Market in Los Angeles. In 1926, Christine Sterling began efforts to preserve the buildings on and around Olvera Street (one of the oldest parts of Los Angeles). After several years of struggle and fundraising, Olvera Street was closed to automobile traffic in 1929, and opened as the Paseo de Los Angeles in 1930. The street and its market quickly became popular tourist sites, promoters touting the area as "A Mexican Street of Yesterday in a City of Today."

No caption. c. 1923. As the Yellowstone River flows north from Yellowstone Lake it passes over two waterfalls (Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls) before reaching the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. This photograph shows the Upper Yellowstone Falls, 109 feet in height, as seen from a nearby peak. One arch of the Chittenden Bridge can be seen crossing the Yellowstone River upstream of the falls (in the upper center of the photograph). Built in 1903, this Melan arch bridge stood until the 1960s, when it was torn down in favor of a new, more modern structure.

Caption: "St. Francis Hotel - S.F. Cal," c. 1913. St. Francis Hotel at Union Square with partial north wing extension and the Dewey Monument in the foreground (Robert I. Aitken, sculptor), which commemorated U.S. Admiral George Dewey's naval victory at the battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War of 1898. The luxury hotel opened in 1904 and, fortunately, suffered little damage from the 1906 earthquake. It was expanded in 1913, and 1972, making it one of the largest hotels in the city. See also 96-07-08-alb01-002.

Caption: "Coney Island, Sunday Crowd. New York. Aug. 19, 1934." Very crowded beach scene on New York's Coney Island. The construction of several resort hotels on the island in the 1870s and 1880s encouraged construction of amusement parks to provide tourist destinations. Coney Island has hosted several large amusement parks over the years, including one of the world's first roller coasters (built in 1884). Numerous smaller attractions were available as well. The island's popularity peaked in the World War II era, but despite some decline is still a world-renowned recreation area.

The hospital was initially named Pacific Colony (1927-1953), followed by Pacific State Hospital (1953-1979); Frank D. Lanterman State Hospital and Developmental Center; and finally Lanterman Developmental Center, which closed in 2015.

Caption: "The Battery, Lower Manhattan, New York, N.Y [sic], Aug. 4, 1934." This photograph shows the Manhattan skyline, as well as the Battery, a 25-acre park at the tip of Manhattan Island. The park was named for the artillery batteries that used to protect the city and its harbor from this location.
