    Caption: "Echo Park [sic] Los Angeles," c. 1910. View across Echo Lake at lush vegetation along the far lake edge. Echo Lake Park opened in 1895. The lake was originally created in 1868 to support the operations of a mill. The mill, however, closed seven years later. The site was later selected for conversion to a city park.

    Caption: "Old State Capitol, Benicia," c. 1906. California's State Capitol moved several times in the first decade of statehood. This photograph shows the third building to serve as the Capitol building, in Benicia. The California State Legislature occupied the building from 1853-1854, until lack of accommodations for the legislators prompted the moving of the Capitol to Sacramento, in February 1854.

The hospital was initially named Pacific Colony (1927-1953), followed by Pacific State Hospital (1953-1979); Frank D. Lanterman State Hospital and Developmental Center; and finally Lanterman Developmental Center, which closed in 2015.

    Caption: "Tea Garden -- Golden Gate Park," c. 1910. View of the five-acre Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Established in 1894 by George Turner Marsh for the Midwinter Exposition of that year, it is the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the U.S.

    Caption: "Agricultural Building, Washington, D.C. July 24, 1934." The Administration Building for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, also called the Jamie L. Whitten Building, sprawls across this photograph. The enormous Beaux-Arts style building, designed by Rankin, Kellogg, and Crane, was constructed between 1903 and 1930.

    Caption: "Boston State House. Sept. 5, 1934." The Massachusetts State House has been the seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since its completion in 1798. Designed by Charles Bullfinch, its prominent feature is its gold-leafed dome. The building, a significant example of Federal architecture in a civic structure, has been declared a National Historic Landmark.

    Caption: "Santa Fe Depot, Stockton," c. 1906. The Santa Fe Depot (William Benson Storey, architect) was completed in 1899 for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the depot was renovated and restored it to its original design, and reopened in 2005.
