Caption: "City Hall, Broad St. Philadelphia, PA. July 31, 1934." Street scene along Broad Street in Philadelphia, with the City Hall building visible in the middle of the photograph. Philadelphia's City Hall was built in 1901, designed by architect John McArthur, Jr. At completion, the building was the world's tallest inhabitable structure. It is the largest municipal building in the world, with almost 700 rooms. A 37-foot-tall statute of William Penn (founder of Philadelphia) adorns the peak of the structure, created by Alexander Milne Calder.

Caption: "Carquinez Bridge -- Crockett, Cal." This photograph shows the original Carquinez Bridge, built to span the Carquinez Strait and thereby contribute to a direct route between Sacramento and San Francisco. The steel cantilevered bridge, designed by Robinson & Steinman, was constructed in 1927. It is no longer extant, having been replaced by two parallel bridges constructed in 1958 and 2003. The structure of the original bridge was removed in 2007. See also 96-07-08-alb11-307 with caption: "Carquinez Bridge, Crockett, California. Oct. 9, 1934."

Caption: "State Capitol, Richmond, Virginia. July 21, 1934." Virginia's State Capitol is visible in the left side of this photograph, while the Virginia Washington Monument can be seen at the right. The Capitol, designed largely by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, was sufficiently complete by October 1792 for the Virginia General Assembly to meet within its walls. The building served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Virginia Washington Monument, completed in 1869, features a 21-foot-tall statue of George Washington, mounted on a horse.

Caption: "Rangers Home - Mount Royal Park," c. 1930. The Smith House, seen in this photograph surrounded by trees and a beautifully manicured flower garden, is a residence in Montreal's Mount Royal Park. Built in 1858 and purchased by the city when the ground was bought for the park's creation, the Smith House has been used for a variety of functions. It currently houses an interpretive center for the park as well as operating as the headquarters for Les amis de la montagne (The Friends of the Mountain), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the environment of Mount Royal.

Caption: "Alcatraz," c. 1906. View of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The building on the highest part of the island, just to the left of center in the photograph, is the Alcatraz Citadel (also known as Fort Alcatraz). Built in 1859 by the U.S. Army for coastal defense purposes, the Citadel began serving as a prison in 1861. It ceased function as a defense fortification and became the Pacific Branch of the U.S. Military Prison in 1907. The Citadel was demolished in 1909. Over the next two decades the facilities on the island were modified and modernized, becoming a federal penitentiary in 1934.
