    The Census of 1852 collection includes enumerations of California's 32 counties, arranged into 126 volumes. Schedule I enumerated the county's inhabitants, while schedule II enurmerated economic production. Many pages of this volume are damaged.

    Caption: "Ruins of Call Building." Completed in 1898 and designed by civic leader Claus Spreckels, the Call building on the corner of 3rd and Market streets was one of the first skyscrapers in San Francisco, built to house the San Francisco Call newspaper offices. While the structure withstood the 1906 earthquake, the interior caught fire and sustained considerable damage. After major renovations, the building is today known as The Central Tower.

    Caption: "Midway Point.," c. 1920. Now-iconic image of a rocky outcropping near Pebble Beach, extending into the Pacific Ocean, with a single cypress tree near the top. This tree, sometimes referred to as the "Lone Cypress," has been photographed extensively over the past century. This tree and outcropping can still be seen as part of the 17-Mile Drive, a scenic road tour of the Pebble Beach Resort area in Monterey County.

The front of the postcard features both an American flag and the Union Jack of Great Britain.

    Caption: "An Abandoned Hydraulic Mine near Camptonville Calif.," c. 1920. Hillside ravaged by hydraulic mining, in which a pressurized jet of water washes sediment and gravel into a series of sluices, allowing the heavier gold and gold-carrying sediment to sink to the bottom for removal. California banned this environmentally destructive practice in 1884.
