Caption: "San Francisco, Oakland Bay Bridge. Opening Day, Nov. 12, 1936." View of a portion of the ceremonies officially opening the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to traffic upon its completion in November 1936. The Bay Bridge's design combined three different types of bridge-building technology over the five miles it covers between San Francisco and Oakland: a suspension span, a cantilevered span, and a tunnel. At the time of its completion the bridge was the longest steel structure on the globe. It also featured the deepest bridge pier ever built, and the world's largest bore tunnel.

Caption: "Traymore Hotel - Atlantic City," c. 1925. View of the Traymore Hotel on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The Art Deco-style Traymore began as a small boarding house, but a rebuild and enlargement after a storm in 1884 led to the building becoming Atlantic City's most popular hotel by the turn of the twentieth century. In 1906 the front tower was constructed, and the back, wood frame portion of the hotel was replaced with a concrete structure in 1914-1915. Patronage declined in the 1960s, and the Traymore Hotel was demolished in 1972.

Caption: "Mirror Lane - Camp Curry," c. 1917. William and Grace McCarthy pose in front of their tent at what was then called Camp Curry. Yosemite's Half Dome Village, established by David and Jennie Curry in 1899, was originally called Camp Curry, and then later Curry Village. It was designed to provide cheaper accommodations for Yosemite tourists than the resort hotels. The couple rented out furnished tents and provided amenities such as a dining tent. As time progressed, the amenities increased, and some hard-sided cabins created.

Caption: "State Capitol, Richmond, Virginia. July 21, 1934." Virginia's State Capitol is visible in the left side of this photograph, while the Virginia Washington Monument can be seen at the right. The Capitol, designed largely by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, was sufficiently complete by October 1792 for the Virginia General Assembly to meet within its walls. The building served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Virginia Washington Monument, completed in 1869, features a 21-foot-tall statue of George Washington, mounted on a horse.

Caption: "Indian Hut Made From Adobe and Bush Branches, Sacaton Indian Reservation, Sacaton, Arizona, May, 24, 1934." View of a small adobe building with a porch area across the length of the façade. The porch is sheltered by a low roof supported by tree trunks or thick tree branches and thatched with grass or sticks. Located south of Phoenix and including the town of Sacaton, the Gila River Indian Reservation is home to members of the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and the Pee-Posh (Maricopa) tribes. The reservation was established in 1859. Eighty years later, in 1939, Congress provided for the self-governance of the reservation via the Gila River Indian Community.

Caption: "Rangers Home - Mount Royal Park," c. 1930. The Smith House, seen in this photograph surrounded by trees and a beautifully manicured flower garden, is a residence in Montreal's Mount Royal Park. Built in 1858 and purchased by the city when the ground was bought for the park's creation, the Smith House has been used for a variety of functions. It currently houses an interpretive center for the park as well as operating as the headquarters for Les amis de la montagne (The Friends of the Mountain), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the environment of Mount Royal.
