Project for Department of Mental Hygiene - Hospitals. The hospital was initially named Pacific Colony (1927-1953), followed by Pacific State Hospital (1953-1979); Frank D. Lanterman State Hospital and Developmental Center; and finally Lanterman Developmental Center, which closed in 2015.

Caption: "Mascot Monarch Grizzly, G. G. Park," c. 1910. Captured in 1889, by a man hired by William Randolph Hearst as a publicity stunt, Monarch was one of the last known Grizzly bears in California. He lived in captivity for the last 22 years of his life, mostly in an enclosure in Golden Gate Park, before he died in 1911.

Caption: "Fairmount Ruins." Shows the damage from the 1906 earthquake fire to the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill in San Francisco, 1906. Although construction was mostly finished in 1906, the advent of the San Francisco earthquake and fire of that year damaged the hotel's interior and delayed opening until 1907. It was the first hotel in what is now the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain. In 1945, the San Francisco hotel was host to an international conference that culminated in the formation of the United Nations.

Caption: "Sugar Factory -- Chino," c. 1915. View of Chino's sugar beet factory, established in 1891 by Robert and Henry Oxnard. Henry later established a larger factory in the town that now bears his name (Oxnard, in Ventura County). The factory operated for more than twenty-five years before closing in October 1917.

Caption: "Hasting [sic] Residence - Benicia," c. 1915, was a grand home built for Daniel N. Hastings, a prominent landowner. The home, completed in 1881 at the tremendous cost of $350,000, including furnishings, was called "Hastings' folly," because it nearly bankrupted its owner. It was dismantled in 1937.
