Caption: "Decorated Locomotive. Fifth Liberty Bond Drive -- Benicia, Calif." During World War I, the U.S. government raised funds for the war by issuing "liberty bonds." Citizens who purchased the bonds could later redeem them for the purchase price plus interest. Liberty Bond Drives were held to encourage people to purchase the bonds. This photograph shows a locomotive employed in the fifth Liberty Bond Drive, held in 1919. Decorated with bunting and flags to inspire patriotic feeling, Liberty Bond Trains crisscrossed the U.S. to round up funding.

No Caption: c. 1910. View of the Desdemona Lighthouse, constructed in 1901 or 1902 on wood pilings over a group of shoals at the mouth of the Columbia River. The shoals carry the same name as the lighthouse, both of which are named for the bark Desdemona which ran aground and was destroyed by the shoals in 1857. The lighthouse was automated in 1934, and its light eventually removed in 1965.

Caption: "Old State Capitol, Benicia," c. 1906. California's State Capitol moved several times in the first decade of statehood. This photograph shows the third building to serve as the Capitol building, in Benicia. The California State Legislature occupied the building from 1853-1854, until lack of accommodations for the legislators prompted the moving of the Capitol to Sacramento, in February 1854.
