Whitten Building, sprawls across this photograph. The enormous Beaux-Arts style building, designed by Rankin, Kellogg, and Crane, was constructed between 1903 and 1930.

Caption: The Awful Fire After the Shake," 1906. A view of San Francisco ablaze after the 1906 earthquake. Considered one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resulting fires killed an estimated 3,000 people and destroyed over 500 city blocks, leaving approximately 200,000 residents homeless.

Design and drawing of California State Building for Nevada Highways Exposition in Reno, Nevada, by Alfred Eichler, c. 1926; from packet of designs and plans by Eichler for the Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927. Built. Initial appropriation of $100,000 was reduced to $50,000, so only one half of the plan was built. The tower was eliminated.

This photograph shows one of the water features within the park, crossed by a pedestrian bridge.

No Caption: Canadian one-cent postage stamp commemorating the three-hundred year anniversary of the founding of Quebec in 1608. This stamp features portraits of Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain, early explorers of Canada. Cartier was the first to claim Canada for the French crown in 1534, while Champlain founded New Canada and Quebec City in 1608.

Caption: "Pasa [sic] Robles Hotel, May 22, 1935." View of the Hotel el Paso de Robles (pass of the oaks). This resort hotel opened in 1891, and featured a variety of amenities including a mineral hot springs "plunge" bath. The hotel burned down in 1940, and was replaced by the building that is still in operation today as the Paso Robles Inn.
