Caption: "Saltair -- Salt Lake." View of the first Saltair resort pavilion and surrounding buildings. Constructed in 1893 and designed by Richard K.A. Kletting, the pavilion hovered above the Great Salt Lake on more than 2,000 posts and pilings. The resort was a popular spot for Mormon families, only fifteen miles from Salt Lake City and overseen by Church leaders. The Church sold the building in 1906. It was later destroyed by fire in 1925, but a second pavilion was quickly built.

Caption: "Temple Drive to Cave of the Winds," c. 1923. Bird's eye view of a road at the bottom of a canyon, on a drive to Cave of the Winds. Two brothers discovered the entrance to the large cave system in 1880, in Williams Canyon just outside of Manitou Springs. Further exploration resulted in opening more caverns within the system, and the site became a tourist attraction, with guided tours having been on offer since 1881.

Caption: "George Washingtons [sic] Tomb, Mount Vernon, Virginia, July 22, 1934." The gated entrance to the tomb holding the remains of George Washington are seen in this photograph, overgrown by ivy. Two unidentified people stand at either side of the entry. The brick tomb was constructed after Washington's death in 1799.

Caption: "Conservatory -- Botanical Gardens -- St. Lewis," c. 1923. Shows the Palm House, built in 1915 to house tropical plants in the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. It was torn down in 1959 to make room for the domed geodesic Climatron building which still stands at the site. See also 96-07-08-alb09- 086.

Caption: "Echo Park [sic] Los Angeles," c. 1910. View across Echo Lake at lush vegetation along the far lake edge. Echo Lake Park opened in 1895. The lake was originally created in 1868 to support the operations of a mill. The mill, however, closed seven years later. The site was later selected for conversion to a city park.

Caption: "Benicia Arsenal Entrance," c. 1915. View of the gateway to Benicia Arsenal, where William McCarthy worked (starting in 1903). Established in 1851, the Benicia Arsenal was the primary ordnance facility of the U.S. Army on the West Coast. The facility was deactivated in 1963, and closed completely the following year. The area now serves a vastly different function, providing work and retail space for artists and artisans.
