The building seen in this photograph, reminiscent of the U.S. Capitol, served as Cuba's Capitol from its completion in 1929 until after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Designed by Eugenio Rayneri Piedra, the building now houses the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

The photograph shows the second of three hotels built on the site, near Monterey, California (this building was destroyed by fire in 1924). The property surrounding the hotel became known as Pebble Beach.
