Caption: "Japanese Garden, Golden Gate Park.," c. 1905. View of the five-acre Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Established in 1894 by George Turner Marsh for the Midwinter Exposition of that year, it is the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the U.S.

Caption, c. 1905. Sixteen camels pull the Ringling Brothers Egyptian Circus Wagon down a street in Santa Rosa in this photograph. The Ringling Brothers Circus first came to Santa Rosa in 1903. The traveling circus became an annual event in the town for the next two decades.

Caption: "California State Capitol." Shows the California State Capitol building and grounds. Located on the west end of Capitol Park, the neoclassical building's construction began in 1860 and was completed in 1874. It houses the state legislature and offices of the governor. The capitol and grounds were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and as a California Historical Landmark in 1974. A parked automobile in the foreground has Grace McCarthy at the wheel, with William McCarthy sitting beside her, and two unidentified people in the backseat, Sacramento, c. 1915.

Caption: "Entrance - Mariposa Grove- Yosemite," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy stands with an automobile near the entrance to Maripose Grove in Yosemite National Park. The Mariposa Grove, near Wawona, is the largest grove of Giant Sequoia trees in Yellowstone National Park. It also includes two of the thirty largest Giant Sequoias in the world.

Caption: "Hopland-Clear Lake Highway," c. 1925. Birdseye view of the Hopland Grade (also called the Hopland Pass), now part of California State Route 175 connecting Hopland (Mendocino County) with Lakeport on Clear Lake, in Lake County. The road, built in the early 1920s, is sometimes called the "crookedest road in California."

Caption: "Fallen Giant - Mariposa Grove," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy poses with two unidentified people next to the Fallen Monarch, the enormous trunk of a fallen Giant Sequoia in Maripose Grove. It is estimated that the tree fell more than 300 years ago, but the natural resistance of Giant Sequoias to rot has preserved the trunk to the present time.

Caption: "Devils Gate -- Nevada -- Elevation 7540 Feet." Devil's Gate is a rock formation near Silver City, Nevada. In the nineteenth century a portion of the formation was blasted away to create enough space for a wagon road, which became a toll road serving as an entryway to the Nevada silver fields.
