Caption: "Golden Gate Bridge Opening Day. U.S. Fleet Passing Under the Golden Gate Bridge. U.S. Flag Ship Pennsylvania [sic]. May 28, 1937." View of the super-dreadnaught battleship USS Pennsylvania as she passed under the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the celebrations surrounding the bridge's opening day. The third U.S. Navy ship named for the state of Pennsylvania, she was launched in 1915. The Pennsylvania served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, and was damaged while in dry-dock during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. After being repaired, she spend the remainder of World War II in the Pacific Theater. Hit by a torpedo in August 1945, the severely damaged Pennsylvania was repaired well enough to serve as a target ship during Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests off Bikini Atoll in July 1946. She was decommissioned that year, and after undergoing radiation testing, was scuttled by the U.S. Navy in February 1948.

No Caption: A 1935 three-cent U.S. Postage stamp, featuring Boulder Dam, now known as Hoover Dam, which was constructed between 1931 and 1936. The concrete arch-gravity dam is located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River on the border between Clark County, Nevada, and Mojave County, Arizona. A National Historic Landmark, the dam provides hydroelectric power, water storage, flood control, and recreation at Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam's construction.

Caption: "Hotel-Saint Francis," c. 1913. St. Francis Hotel at Union Square with partial north wing extension and the Dewey Monument in the foreground (Robert I. Aitken, sculptor), which commemorated U.S. Admiral George Dewey's naval victory at the battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War of 1898. The luxury hotel opened in 1904 and, fortunately, suffered little damage from the 1906 earthquake. It was expanded in 1913, and 1972, making it one of the largest hotels in the city.

Caption: "The Fairmont," c. 1906. View of the Fairmont Hotel, a luxury hotel in San Francisco. Although construction was mostly finished in 1906, the advent of the San Francisco earthquake and fire of that year damaged the hotel's interior and delayed opening until 1907. It was the first hotel in what is now the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain. In 1945, the San Francisco hotel was host to an international conference that culminated in the formation of the United Nations.
