Caption: "6 inch Howitzers -- Camp Kearney," c. 1917. View of several 6" Howitzers, as well as several outbuildings and a line of artillery weapons under canvas covers. William McCarthy is standing next to the middle Howitzer. Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s.

Caption: "Benicia Arsenal Gate," c. 1905, Benicia, California. William McCarthy began his career as an inspector of armaments for the U.S. War Department at the Benicia Arsenal in 1903. The arsenal was established in 1851 as the first Ordnance Supply Depot in the West, from which it supplied and supported U.S. troops, from the Civil War through WWII and the Korean War. It was deactivated in 1963.

Caption: "Mammoth Hot Springs Resort," c. 1923. Grace McCarthy poses in front of Mammoth Hot Springs Resort. Originally called the National Hotel, the building opened for business in 1883. It underwent significant alterations and renovations between 1911 and 1913, by which time the resort was known as the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. The hotel was torn down in 1936 in favor of a more modern facility.

Caption: "San Francisco, Oakland Bay Bridge. Opening Day, Nov. 12, 1936." View of a portion of the ceremonies officially opening the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to traffic upon its completion in November 1936. The Bay Bridge's design combined three different types of bridge-building technology over the five miles it covers between San Francisco and Oakland: a suspension span, a cantilevered span, and a tunnel. At the time of its completion the bridge was the longest steel structure on the globe. It also featured the deepest bridge pier ever built, and the world's largest bore tunnel.

Caption: "Veu-Deleu [sic] Santa Cruz," c. 1910. Ocean shore scene with waves and high spray, with various structures on a promontory in the distance. The Vue de L'eau (View of the Water) was a station on the Santa Cruz, Garfield Park and Capitola Electric Railway electric streetcar line. The station, built in 1891, was located at the very end of the line, on a promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It featured an observatory on the top story. The same company also built a casino, ballroom, and restaurant nearby. The station burned down in 1925. See also 96-07-08-alb08-193.

Caption: "Carquinez Bridge -- Crockett, Cal." This photograph shows the original Carquinez Bridge, built to span the Carquinez Strait and thereby contribute to a direct route between Sacramento and San Francisco. The steel cantilevered bridge, designed by Robinson & Steinman, was constructed in 1927. It is no longer extant, having been replaced by two parallel bridges constructed in 1958 and 2003. Caption: "Traymore Hotel - Atlantic City," c. 1925. View of the Traymore Hotel on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The Art Deco-style Traymore began as a small boarding house, but a rebuild and enlargement after a storm in 1884 led to the building becoming Atlantic City's most popular hotel by the turn of the twentieth century. In 1906 the front tower was constructed, and the back, wood frame portion of the hotel was replaced with a concrete structure in 1914-1915. Patronage declined in the 1960s, and the Traymore Hotel was demolished in 1972.
